In December 2014 the Minister for Education, Hon Peter Collier MLC, announced the closure of both South Fremantle and Hamilton Senior High Schools, at the end of 2017, to form a new public secondary school for the greater Fremantle area to open in 2018.
The new school will cater for students from Years 7 to 12, on the site of South Fremantle Senior High School. It will be a local secondary school that provides students with a breadth of curriculum leading to both university entrance and training opportunities. A feature of the newschool will be the inclusion of a Gifted and Talented Selective Academic program for students with exceptional academic abilities. It will retain the state-of-the-art maritime Trade Training Centre and continue an established commitment to sustainability as a carbon neutral school. The new school has been designed to meet the expectations expressed to the Minister during the community consultation held in 2014.
The new school will amalgamate the best of both schools to create a quality high school for our students and will open as an Independent Public School with a school board to provide strategic direction and governance. Ms Margaret Collins, Regional Executive Director, South Metropolitan Education Region will oversee the establishment of the college. The foundation principal will be appointed from 2017 to work with the board to shape the emerging school, its staffing and its student programs. South Fremantle and Hamilton Senior High Schools have served their communities well and there will be fond memories and a rich history as a legacy. However, declining enrolments and limited curriculum choices have led to the need to revitalise secondary education in the area.
All students enrolled at Hamilton will be supported to transition to the new school. Hamilton Senior High School is proud to announce that we are now an Independent Public School. Parents and community members are invited to present themselves for selection to the School Board. All enquiries to the Principal, Donna McDonald.
